Applying for a UK Standard Visitor Visa? There are some questions that come up time and time again, particularly about finances, supporting documents, processing times and sponsorship.

Here are five common questions, with straightforward answers and links to the official GOV.UK guidance.

1. How much money do I need to show for a UK visit visa?

There is no fixed minimum amount of money you must have in your bank account to apply for a UK Standard Visitor Visa.

You need to demonstrate that you can afford the reasonable costs of your visit, including accommodation, food, transport and other expenses.

The decision maker will consider your financial circumstances, your income, the money available to you and the expected cost of your trip.

If someone else is paying for some or all of your visit, this should be explained and supported with appropriate evidence.

2. How long does a UK visit visa decision take?

The usual processing time for a Standard Visitor Visa application made outside the UK is around 3 weeks.

This period generally starts after you attend your appointment at the Visa Application Centre and complete the required identity and document submission steps.

Allow additional time before applying to prepare your documents, complete the application and attend your appointment.

Processing times can vary, so check the latest information before making travel arrangements.

3. What documents do I need for a UK visit visa?

There is no single mandatory checklist of supporting documents that applies to every applicant.

The documents you provide should reflect your individual circumstances and support the information in your application.

Depending on your situation, relevant evidence might include:

  • Bank statements and evidence of income.
  • Employment confirmation or evidence of self-employment.
  • Evidence of studies, where applicable.
  • Details of your family and personal circumstances.
  • Evidence of your legal residence, if applying from a country where you are not a national.
  • Information about your proposed visit, including its purpose, duration and estimated costs.
  • Evidence of financial support, if someone else is paying for your trip.

The important thing is that your documents support what you have stated in your application. Sending large numbers of unrelated documents is not necessarily helpful.

4. Why do UK visit visa applications get refused, and what happens if mine is?

A UK visit visa can be refused if the decision maker is not satisfied that the applicant meets the requirements of the Immigration Rules.

For example, concerns may arise about:

  • Whether the applicant is a genuine visitor.
  • Whether they intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit.
  • Whether their financial circumstances support the proposed trip.
  • Whether the purpose and duration of the visit are credible.
  • Whether the information provided is consistent and supported by evidence.

If your application is refused, read the refusal letter carefully. It should explain the reasons for the decision and any available options.

For most standard visitor visa refusals, there is no ordinary right of appeal. You may be able to submit a fresh application, but it is important to understand and address the previous refusal reasons first.

You must also declare previous visa refusals when making a subsequent application.

5. Can someone sponsor my UK visit visa application? Do I need an invitation letter?

Yes. Someone else can pay for some or all of your UK visit, including your travel, accommodation and living expenses.

This is commonly referred to as third-party sponsorship.

You should provide evidence explaining:

  • Your relationship with the person sponsoring you.
  • What expenses they will cover.
  • How they will provide the financial support.
  • That they have sufficient funds to support you as well as their own financial commitments.

If you are visiting a friend or relative, an invitation letter can help explain the purpose of your visit, where you will stay and the arrangements being made.

However, an invitation letter is not a substitute for the other evidence required for your application.

Remember, even when someone else is paying for your trip, the decision maker will still assess you as the applicant against the genuine visitor requirements.
